Andro Fashion

I have always been inspired by menswear and the androgynous (having characteristics of both sexes) look. I’m not sure if it’s the mystery of wondering if it’s men’s or women’s clothing, or just how fun it can be mixing and matching items from both genders. I have no problem wearing clothing from any department (mens, women’s or kids); as long as it’s appealing to my eye, and the price is right, I will wear it. I guess that’s part of the reason it takes me so long while thrifting, I’m checking ALL the sections. Lol Maybe it’s the inner tomboy in me that makes me so gender-fluid when it comes to fashion choices, but hey, that just gives me more options right?!

Someone who always nails the look defying all gender boundaries is my sis, Janelle Monae. I just absolutely adore her. Since her debut in 2003 she chose to remain herself being comfortable in her own skin, and didn’t change her look for the industry. She even became a cover girl, and stayed true to her androgynous roots.

Although Janelle is my fav and the perfect example, many female celebrities were up on the menswear trend in 2018. Then on the flip side you have another one of my faves EJ Johnson serving many looks defying gender boundaries. A few of my other favorite celebs that break outside of gender norms with fashion are Prince, Willow and Jaden Smith, and Ellen Degeneres, just to name a few. Who are some of your faves?

The key to wearing menswear as a woman (or vice versa) is fit, styling, and of course confidence. You always want to add a touch of femininity/masculinity to all your looks whether you are in men’s or women’s clothing. This could be with accessories, makeup, etc, or just mixing both men and women’s clothing together to complete an outfit/look. Never be afraid to visit any department when it comes to fashion. Never conform, and wear whatever you want to! Are you here for andro fashion? I know I’m all for it because style is ambiguous!
